The Relationship Deal Breaker: Trust

    Have you ever met someone you wanted to get to know better, but they didn’t let you? Has someone not trusted you? In When the Stars Go Blue by Caridad Fevrer Soledad, a skilled and passionate dancer, struggles through her relationship with Jonathan and her career. One major theme in the book is that trust can get in the way and affect relationships.

    For example Jonathan, Soledad’s boyfriend, has a hard time trusting Soledad and Taz, a soccer player that likes Soledad. Despite the fact that Soledad makes it very clear how much she loves Jonathan, he doesn't like Taz interacting with Soledad. Jonathan’s possessiveness results in many problems within their relationship. For example Soledad doesn't approve of how protective Jonathan is and this leads to their breakup. This is important to the readers because it presents a consequence of not being able to trust someone who is very close to them. The breakup displays what can become of a relationship where there isn't enough trust. Because Jonathan hasn't learned to fully trust Soledad he does something idiotic, thinking that it will ensure that Soledad won’t leave him. He jeopardizes her career and loses her in the process all because he couldn't learn to trust her.

    What I’m trying to say is that when people don’t let others in, even when they've earned their trust, that relationship is put on the line. This is important because it connects to children or teens being able to trust people who are significant to them. The fact that people can lose someone they love when they don’t trust them has to be realized. It’s crucial for troubled teens to realize this because when they trust someone they allow them to help them and understand what they’re going through. Teens need to understand and accept the fact that they don’t have to be going through life alone.
