Reading the World: Social Justice in My Reading Life

  Have you ever felt like an outcast due to people shying away because of your differences? Have you ever made someone feel smaller because of they were different? Everyday life consists of discrimination against people, which started ages ago and is continuing now. Some people are unable to see that making someone else feel small because of their race, size, age, ethnicity, or religion is wrong because they are too occupied on the fact that someone is not normal, like themselves. Discrimination for any reason is unfair because it is usually directed towards things that people can't change. Like there ethnicity, racial background and age.
Unfortunately, despite the fact that the big issue of discrimination was thought to be taken care of a long time ago today, you see people discriminating others on the street, on social media, and in books.
  Cinder by Marissa Meyer is a great example of discrimination in society. This book presents the idea that discrimination is unfair because it wrongly outs someone and makes them feel small. Cinder is about a cyborg named Cinder and takes place in the future with a more advanced civilization. In this society cyborgs are looked down upon because they are part robot. We get to witness this discrimination against that group from Cinder's eyes. In the book Marissa Meyer begins to support her main idea by showing how Cinder is regularly treated at the market; with disgust and hatred. Then as the book continues readers get a look at how Cinder's own step-mother talks to her and treats her. The book then closes with great humiliation for Cinder, with no one's pity due to the fact that she's a cyborg.
  Recently, I was told of some discrimination going on in school. My friend who has lesbian parents were losing friends because of her parents' sexuality. She was getting teased for it first, but then kids took it to the next level and told people not to be friends with her. This act was unfair and not to mention unkind because she was going to have to pay for her family's difference. The discrimination against her parents being lesbians was causing her emotional pain that she didn't deserve to feel. This shows that even discrimination has made it to kids, when they shouldn't be experiencing that harsh behavior at such a young age. It not expected for people to agree or accept other's differences, but hoped that you can get past whatever difference and not hate someone for it.
